The Facelift 8V (2017–2018): Enter the DAZA

The facelifted RS3, known internally as the 8V.2, arrived in 2017. The new DAZA five-cylinder engine transformed the car. Audi ditched the first generation car’s iron engine block for an aluminium one, shaving around 26kg off the front end. It added dual injection (direct and port – an upgrade designed to reduce carbon build-up on valves), an integrated exhaust manifold, and a new electronic wastegate, making the engine both lighter and far more efficient.

The swap to a larger turbocharger meant power jumped to 400PS, but more importantly, torque came in earlier and harder, and the five-cylinder engine was more responsive everywhere in the rev range. This combination of more power, less weight and a reconfigured Mechatronix software for the Haldex system (which directs more power to the rear) made the 8V.2 feel like a completely different car—sharper, more agile, with improved steering and with a more charismatic exhaust note, especially when paired with the optional RS Sports Exhaust.

For tuners, the DAZA is a dream. A simple Stage 1 map with supporting hardware can push power comfortably past 460–500bhp. Hybrid turbos take it into the 600–700bhp range, and with forged builds and upgraded fueling, 1,000bhp RS3s are now a reality. Add to this its improved reliability and reduced valve carbon build-up (thanks to port injection), and it’s easy to see why the DAZA-equipped RS3 has become the holy grail among buyers.

This extra performance potential comes free from added issues with the DAZA only really suffering from the same common problems as the iron-block cars, namely sticking injectors and noisy transfer box and differential bearings.

The OPF Era (2019–2020): DNWA and the GPF Effect

In 2019, stricter emissions rules forced Audi to add a gasoline particulate filter (GPF/OPF) to the RS3. These late facelift cars, often coded DNWA, look almost identical to the DAZA but come with a more muted exhaust and slightly different ECU calibration to meet WLTP standards.

On paper, power remained at 400PS, and performance was unchanged. But to the ears of many enthusiasts, these OPF filter cars lacked the drama of their pre-filtered siblings. The crackles and pops were dialled back, the idle quieter, and the five-cylinder howl less raw.

That said, these cars are no less capable. With careful tuning, they can still match DAZA levels of performance – but the exhaust system becomes more complex to modify legally, and OPF filter deletes can lead to MOT headaches in the UK. For those wanting a stealthier, newer RS3 with the same mechanical strength, the OPF cars make a lot of sense – especially the fully-loaded Sport Edition cars – though they’ll always sit in the DAZA’s shadow for sound and tuner-friendliness, meaning prices for equivalent cars can be slightly lower than DAZA examples, even if the DNWA is slightly newer.

Exhaust Character: The RS3’s Soul

One of the biggest talking points with every RS3 is the exhaust note.

The DAZA facelift is the definitive model to experience that iconic five-pot burble. Loud, rich, and full of overrun theatrics that define the RS3 experience.

The DNWA cars, with their restrictive OPF filters, dampened it, keeping the five-cylinder character but stripping back the drama.

An MRC Tuning Stage 1 tune, combined with a Forge turbo elbow will unleash around 490PS. Stage 2 requires the elbow, plus a front mount intercooler and a downpipe with sports cats but can increase grunt to 530PS. Above this is stage 3 where things get serious. Joining the mods above would be a TT700 turbo, 980cc injectors, and additional supporting mods, but you can comfortably expect between 570-600bhp+

DWNA 8V.2: The OPF filters in the DWNA cars mean power is slightly restricted, with a Forge turbo elbow and Stage 1 remap only making 460PS. But add a downpipe with secondary cat delete and you’re looking nearer 490PS. Once you get past this point, the potential power output becomes very similar to DAZA cars when tuned.

So, Which RS3 Should You Buy?

It depends on your priorities.

Best base for tuning: The 8V.2 DAZA. Light, strong, charismatic, and huge tuning potential. The one enthusiasts fight over.

Best balance of newness and subtlety: The OPF 8V.2. Same punch, quieter manners, newer build dates.

The latest chapter in the RS3 story is the 8Y, launched in 2021. Still powered by the EA855 evo five-cylinder (DNWC engine code) as the DNWA, it makes 400–407PS depending on market. On paper, the figures don’t seem a big leap over the outgoing car, but in reality, the 8Y feels like a revolution.

The big news is chassis tech. Audi fitted the RS Torque Splitter, a twin-clutch rear axle system that can actively distribute torque side-to-side. This transforms the RS3’s character: instead of the Haldex-led “safe understeer” of old, the 8Y can now rotate under power, feel rear-biased in corners, and even slide when provoked. It’s the most engaging, confidence-inspiring RS3 to date, finally giving the chassis the adjustability its engine always deserved.

Extracting Its Full Potential: Tuning The RS3

Pre-Facelift 8V: The iron block engine is the strongest of the lot, so if seriously huge power is your goal, and you are prepared to shell out for the supporting mods required to make it, then the pre-facelift is hard to beat. However, for those just wanting to boost performance with some simple bolt-on mods, the potential is a little lower. A stage one ECU tune can bump output to around 410PS, while Stage 2, combined with a downpipe (with secondary cat delete), uprated intercooler, free flowing intake and a high flow fuel pump, will take it up to 430PS with a big slug more torque. Above Stage 2 the turbocharger runs out of puff and needs swapping to a hybrid turbo to extract more gains.

Audi RS3 8V.1 Pre-Facelift (2015–2016)

The first RS3 8V launched in Sportback (hatchback) form and came with 362bhp and 465Nm of torque from the original 2.5-litre engine (code CEPA-derived). It featured a 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic gearbox and a Haldex-based Quattro system. Despite its performance, some enthusiasts criticized this version for understeer at the limit (often attributed to its heavy cast iron engine block) and a slightly muted driving experience. However, it established the RS3 as the fastest accelerating car in its class and set a new standard for compact performance.

Audi RS3 8V.2 Facelift (2017–2019)

Audi significantly revised the RS3 for the 2017 model year. Power increased to 394bhp and 480Nm thanks to the all-new aluminium-block EA855 evo engine (code DAZA), which was lighter and more responsive. The facelift also introduced improved handling (in part due to the DAZA engine being 26kg lighter), added more aggressive styling, a fully digital Virtual Cockpit dash display, and a wider track at the front for better dynamics. It was also the first time the RS3 was offered as a saloon, a move that expanded its global appeal, particularly in the U.S. market, but also here in the UK, where the saloon shape was a real looker.

Audi RS3 DNWA Engine (2019–2020)

The final evolution of the RS3 8V came with the DNWA engine code, a revision of the DAZA that met stricter emissions standards as imposed by the Worldwide harmonised Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) regulations. To meet these tighter standards, the exhaust was fitted with OPF/GPF particulate filters. These reduced emissions while keeping performance figures largely the same, but dulled the iconic engine sound. This version marked the end of the 8V era before the arrival of the 8Y generation in 2022.

With that in mind, we decided to give you the lowdown on the vast array of factory options that are available for the car, highlighting the must-have upgrades that will transform your driving and ownership experience, so you can seek these out when buying your next RS3 8V.2

Audi Sportback Or Saloon

For starters, there is a choice of body style for your RS3, with either a Sportback or Saloon models to choose from. When new, the Saloon commanded a £950 premium over the Sportback, with prices starting at £45,675 compared to £44,725 for base cars before options.

Both body styles drive very similar, with the differences more down to personal aesthetics or loading requirements rather than any noticeable performance edge.

Brakes

As standard, the 8V.2 came with highly effective steel discs and black eight-piston calipers. Red calipers were offered as a £325 option, while to swap the front setup to carbon ceramic discs and special grey calipers (equipped with unique high performance and temperature pistons and seals) and carbon ceramic specific compound pads, was £4,695. This was only an option on DAZA cars as it was discontinued as an upgrade from 2019 onwards.

Audi Paintwork Colour Palette

The 8V.2 came as standard in iconic Nardo grey paint, but there was also a range of optional colours that came at a price. These included Glacier White, Mythos Black Metallic, Daytona Grey Pearlescent and Catalunya Red Metallic for £550, or Panther Black Crystal or Ara Blue Crystal for £775. If these hues weren’t radical enough, there was also the chance to specify the 8V.2 with a custom Audi Exclusive colour. This was a £2400 option and could increase the delivery time for a new car by up to two years.

Exhaust Systems

One of the most popular upgrades for the RS3 is to swap the standard exhaust system for the RS Sports exhaust. Costing £1,000, this features black tailpipes and an extra link pipe to increase flow and noise when the valves are open and is considered to be the very best sounding and performing exhaust upgrade for the RS3, even over aftermarket options.

Engine Upgrades

Carbon-fibre engine covers for the engine top and inlet manifold were a nice touch and could be selected for an additional £1000. They are also a popular retrofit upgrade.

Headlights Options

The 8V.2’s standard headlights are LED items that work well, especially when paired with High Beam Assist, which is a £150 option that dims the lights to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. An even more sophisticated system could be chosen however, in the form of Matrix LED headlights. These were an £895 option that added sweeping indicators, and advanced matrix beam technology, allowing the LEDs to dip, move, and switch off segments to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic and provide improved lighting performance.

In base spec, the RS3 8V.2 comes with silver trim for the grille surround, window trims, while the splitter and rear diffuser trim are body colour. Those looking for a more menacing edge, could opt for the £795 Gloss Black Styling Pack, which included the grille surround, window trims, lower splitter, rear diffuser trim and rear spoiler trim. Alternatively, there is also the Matt Aluminium Styling Pack which is the same but in matt aluminium, apart from the spoiler remains colour coded.

Panoramic Glass Sunroof

For those who preferred a more spacious-looking and airy cabin and to better hear the glorious DAZA engine for £1075 there was a Panoramic Glass Roof option. Thos after pure performance often did not choose this option as it adds around 30kg to the highest point on the car, which can adversely affect handling on the limit.

Wheels

The 8V.2 was the first RS3 to offer staggered width wheels with a wider 8.5J wheel at the front with 255-section tyres and 8J at the rear with 235-section tyres. As standard, these were silver five spoke wheels, with Titanium finish a £795 option or an Anthracite and diamond cut design available for £895.

Mirrors Upgrades

Harking back to the early days of the RS brand, the standard mirror caps on the RS3 are matt aluminium, but a gloss black option is offered for £90. Carbon-fibre caps are available, but only as an accessory, not as an option, for £500.

The mirrors on the 8V.2 do not electrically fold as standard, but this, as well as heating can be added for £275, while a dimming feature will add another £100 on top of that.

Glass Options

Tinted privacy glass is offered as an option at the rear for £375 and is a very popular upgrade that is found on many RS3s.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

Most modern cars come with a rudimentary tyre pressure monitoring system as standard, but these often only tell you if it believes a tyre is flat or low and the RS3’s standard system is no different. The optional Tyre Pressure Monitoring System however, is much more advanced and uses sensors in the tyre valves to record individual tyre pressures and temperatures which is displayed on the dash. For £250 it is an option that is well worth the outlay.

Magnetic Ride Control

Also known as Mag Ride, Magnetic Ride Control was a £1000 option that added dampers which use magnetorheological fluid to instantly adjust the damping characteristics of the suspension in real time. It enhances both ride comfort and handling by automatically responding to road conditions and driving behaviour. It can also be electronically adjusted via controls in the cabin with settings for Comfort, Auto or Dynamic, depending on your ride preference and driving style.

Audi Sport Package

Those considering the upgrade to Magnetic Ride Control would’ve been wise to consider the Audi Sport Pack instead, this is because, not only does it include Mag Ride, but it also adds the RS Sports Exhaust and the advanced Type Pressure Monitoring System as part of the package that cost just £1700, a saving of £550 over buying the parts separately.

Top Speed Increase

Those wanting to explore the RS3’s full speed potential were required to shell out £1600 to have the car’s Top Speed electronically delimited to 174mph. Unless you are planning on using your car on Germany’s unrestricted autobahns or competing in top speed events, this is an upgrade we’d happily sacrifice, as even on a trackday, you are unlikely to be able to reach these speeds anyway.

As standard the RS3 8V.2 came with trim inlays in the dash and door cards in a 3D carbon-effect. These could be upgraded to the Aluminium Design Pack for £295, which featured aluminium trim in carbon texture with additional ambient lighting. For those that love the lightweight weave, there was also a carbon-fibre inlay option that was £850.

Standard Black Leather Seats or Super Sports Seats

Another of the must-have mods when specifying the 8V.2 was the addition of Super Sports seats. These were a £795 option that added bucket-style seats in black leather and diamond stitching. These are more supportive and sportier looking than the standard seats in black leather, although you could upgrade these with electric lumbar support for £250 or go fully electric for £850.

When it comes to stitching, you could choose Rock Grey or Crescendo Red as standard and this applies to both standard and the Super Sports Seats, although they come with diamond quilting. This stitching continues on the door card arm rests and the gear gaiter.

There was also the option for cream coloured leather called Lunar Silver which came with black stitching.

If you had rock grey stitching you could have the Extended Leather Pack for £275 which adds leather door card arm rests and leather knee pads, while those with Crescendo Red stitching could opt for the £895 RS Design Pack. This added leather door card arm rests, Alcantara knee pads, red air vent rings, RS embroidered floor mats, red interior stitching and seat belts with a red pin stripe edge.

Driver Assistance Package

Costing £1250, this is one of the most expensive options for the RS3, but packs in a lot of tech for the money. It can be identified externally by the presence of a radar unit mounted in the front grille. This provides the car with adaptive cruise control, meaning once set, it will automatically regulate the distance to the car in front. On top of this clever feature is Blind Spot Assist, which lights an orange waring light in the wing mirror if something is in your blind spot; Emergency Assist, which primes the car and safety systems if it senses an impending accident and can also automatically brake to help avoid collisions; Lane Assist, which gently adds steering inputs to guide you back into your lane is you start to stray; High Beam Assist and a useful camera-based traffic sign recognition system that scans road signs to tell you speed limits.

Comfort & Sound Package

This is another must-have upgrade as it adds the excellent Bang & Olufsen HiFi stereo system with 14 speakers and subwoofer. It also included Audi Advanced Key, which allows keyless entry and exit and keyless start and stop, a reverse camera and ambient lighting in the centre console cup holders and speaker surrounds. Although all these items were also available separately, by choosing the Comfort and Sound Pack for £995, you would actually save around £500.

Extra Technology

Hill Hold Assist is a £95 option, while Audi Smartphone Wireless Charging added a wireless phone charger in the centre console arm rest cubby for £325.

This article outlines what makes a car ineligible for purchase by our team for inclusion as part of our impeccable stock list, highlighting the meticulous inspections and checks conducted by our inspection team, led by sales manager Louis – our very own “car detective” – to uncover a car’s true history. The team’s role is simple but critical: to ensure that every vehicle we sell represents the highest standards of honesty, quality, and factory originality. The “Car Detective” approach

The inspection team are responsible for appraising every prospective vehicle and confirming whether it meets our standards for resale. Their job isn’t just to look at a car and see if it’s clean or shiny. They investigates every aspect of the car’s past and present condition, acting almost like forensic analysts. Their goal is to ensure true representation of the car’s condition and history, ensuring our customers receive nothing but the best.

We don’t buy cars we can’t stand behind with confidence. And we certainly won’t rely on polish and our detailing skills to disguise fundamental issues. As we say at Automotive Addiction, you can’t polish a turd – and we won’t even try.

The cars we don’t buy are:

1. Cars with incomplete or suspicious histories

Even before we see a car in the metal, our investigative team are already hard at work. This begins with a full HPi check to ensure the car isn’t stolen, written off, or subject to any outstanding finance. But that’s just the start. We also check for any insurance markers for accident claims that would indicate a car has been damaged and repaired in the past, or even if it has been written off as salvage, but then repaired and put back on the road. 

If our initial checks through the various online services such as HPi and VCheck are not 100% conclusive, we can investigate ownership history of the car through social media groups, online forums, and previous sale listings to more accurately trace a car’s past. Transparency is essential.

We also review the service history, both online through our access to various dealer and specialist-level portals, and any physical documentation such as invoices and service books the owner might present. Incomplete, inconsistent, or clearly faked service records are immediate red flags. Our customers expect a complete and truthful account of a car’s life, ideally from pedantic and enthusiastic previous keepers — and we make sure that’s what they get.

2. High-mileage cars with no exceptional qualities

While we won’t outright reject higher-mileage vehicles, they must be exceptional in their mechanical and cosmetic condition, as well as their service history to be considered. Typically, we prefer low-mileage examples, because they better retain factory quality and mechanical integrity.

If a car has high mileage but displays excessive wear inconsistent with its age, or if its service records don’t support the mileage, it’s immediately excluded.

3. Cars with evidence of mileage manipulation or blockers

Mileage blockers have become disturbingly common in recent times, especially in desirable models like the Audi RS3. These electronic devices interrupt the signal between the odometer and the ECU, effectively freezing the mileage – and deceiving buyers.

To combat this, we perform a diagnostic check with factory level VCDS software. This allows us to access hidden data within the car’s engine and transmission ECUs such as fault codes, the launch counter, transmission mileage, and engine mileage. If discrepancies between engine and transmission mileage exceed the factory tolerance of 5%, it suggests tampering has taken place – and we walk away from the car.

Any fault codes are further investigated, and if we uncover evidence of concealment or masking of issues, the car is rejected immediately.

4. Cars with non-factory paintwork or accident damage

Cosmetic perfection is not our only concern; authenticity is key. We closely inspect the paint and bodywork for evidence of resprays, filler, and panel replacements.

Here’s what we look for:

Paint finish consistency across all panels – when cars are painted at the factory, they are sprayed by robots, which give an extremely uniform appearance to both the paint thickness, colour and texture of finish. This is extremely difficult for a human to replicate and it’s this difference in finish that can give away a previous repair.

Metallic flake distribution – factory paint has uniform distribution; repaints often don’t, with the metallic flake either being more sparse or denser than original. While not always immediately obvious, it can affect the overall colour of the repainted panel, which then jars against the rest of the panels with factory paint.

Lacquer quality — orange peel effect is added by the factory to help conceal minor defects and produce a uniform finish to panels, this should be consistent across the car with factory standards. Any deviation from this means the panel has received non factory paint or has been flatted and polished for some reason that has not been applied to the rest of the car.

Sharp body lines – factory paint typically measures between 90-120 microns; with less on the car’s trademark creases and lines in order to maintain their stark definition. If we see that these lines are softer than usual it often highlights additional paint has been applied indicating a previous repair.

Paint thickness gauge readings – To accurately test the thickness of a cars paint, we use a professional digital paint gauge, which measures the distance between the outer surface of the lacquer down to the metal of the panel beneath. Any panel with a paint depth significantly above or below expected manufacturer levels suggests repainting, filler, or over-polishing.

We also inspect the wheels for signs of refurbishment: as well as any kerbing, lacquer peel, missing OEM stickers, or non-genuine centre caps, which are all signs of cutting corners.

Even minor indicators of exterior work, like door card removal marks or telltale signs of puller use, trigger a deeper investigation and we will go to the extent of removing door cards, trim parts and panels if necessary to get an accurate assessment of any work that may have been carried out in the past, but may not be immediately obvious on the surface.

If a panel has been replaced, we check that the replacement part is OEM and that its date stamp matches the rest of the vehicle. A panel with a date stamp of a different year to the rest of the car for example, means it has been replaced at some point and is not original to the vehicle at the time of manufacture. And while a replacement panel in itself may not be cause for alarm, it’s the reason why that panel has been replaced that is of such concern to us, as it very likely indicates serious damage has occurred. 

5. Cars that have been wrapped

Vehicle wrapping is a popular way to alter the appearance of your vehicle, however the application of a vinyl wrap can also mask the quality of the paintwork underneath, making accurately evaluating the car’s condition extremely difficult. For this reason we do not buy cars that are vinyl wrapped, even if the work has been carried out to a high standard. Paint protection film is different, as it is transparent and we can still check the paint quality so these cars are considered.

6. Left hand drive models and foreign imports 

We only deal in right hand drive UK cars. We will not accept any foreign imported models whether they are right or left hand drive.

While we strive for perfection, it’s not a requirement

While we try to find car’s in as perfect condition as possible, we understand that cars are there to be used and driven and by their very nature will receive minor cosmetic imperfections – even with the most sympathetic and meticulous of owners. In fact, we’ve even found some brand new cars with delivery mileage have had some paintwork, possibly to rectify an imperfection of small scuff during the delivery process. 

That’s why minor imperfections like light bumper scuffs, kerbed wheels, stone chips to the bonnet or light wear on interiors and trim for example, are accepted as they can easily be addressed to the required level before resale – but these must be consistent with the car’s age and overall condition. We do not buy cars with crash damage, filler or structural repairs, and will only consider a cars with light cosmetic paintwork if the respray is exceptional, OEM-standard, and fully documented.

Preparing a Car for Appraisal

If a car passes our initial online and background checks, we can then invite the owner in to have the car inspected in the metal. But before it goes under the light in our inspection booth, it undergoes a comprehensive safe wash, ensuring dirt and surface contaminants don’t hide paint defects or damage. Only once clean, does Louis begin his painstaking panel-by-panel assessment of the paint, wheels, interior, and underbody.

The Automotive Addiction standard

At the heart of our process is honesty. We are not in the business of flipping shiny cars with questionable pasts. Every car we sell is something we would be proud to own ourselves – and that means passing one of the most rigorous vetting processes in the industry.

If a car doesn’t meet our criteria, we won’t try to make it work. We won’t hide damage under detailing, fudge mileage, or mask history. That’s not who we are.

When you see a car listed by Automotive Addiction, you can be certain it has passed every check, every inspection, and every investigation – because anything less doesn’t make the cut.

All is not lost

Although we impose the highest of standards for cars we select for Automotive Addiction’s own sales stock, that doesn’t mean we will completely reject your car if it doesn’t make the grade.
