Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk – The ULTIMATE SUV

Dan Sherwood

Few things in life command as much attention as the sound of a big displacement American V8 engine. Throw in some brash bodywork and you’ve got yourself a muscle car that snaps necks at 100 paces. But for those that crave even more open-mouthed looks, there’s the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

At the time of its launch in 2019, it was ranked as the world’s most powerful production SUV. This accolade was all the more impressive when you consider its £89,995 price tag was around half or even a third of that of its closest competitors.

But even now, with its formidable stats shrinking in the face of the latest breed of mental high-riding rivals, such as the 715bhp Ferrari Purosangue, the 893bhp Lotus Eletre R and the bonkers 1,011bhp Rivian R1S, this most brutal of four-by-fours is still a mind-boggling machine and a total assault on the senses.

As you’d expect, it does indeed have the sonorous V8 soundtrack, but it has cranked things up to eleven by adding a shrieking twin-scroll supercharger into the mix.

Sourced directly from the Dodge Charger Hellcat, the supercharged 6.2-litre HEMI V8 not only produces a guttural roar but also a grin-inducing 707bhp (some 66 more than a Lamborghini Urus) and a frankly outrageous 868nm of torque.

This weapon’s grade powerplant endows the Trackhawk with enough shove to defy physics and wrap the space / time continuum. Launch its 2.4 tonnes of steroidal mass at the horizon and it will travel from 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds. It will also complete the quarter mile sprint in under 12 seconds and continue on to a 180mph top speed.

This tsunami of torque is delivered to the tarmac via an eight-speed automatic transmission with additional settings for Sport and Track, plus the ability to switch to manual shifting via the steering wheel-mounted paddles. The permanent four-wheel drive system utilises a sophisticated electronic limited-slip differential as well as strengthened driveshafts and rear axle to cope with the otherworldly power.

Suspension wise, there are also settings for Street, Sport and Track, to tailor the Trackhawk’s manners and allow you to exploit all that preposterous power on whether on the road or the circuit.

Stopping the Trackhawk is just as impressive with the huge 430mm Brembo brakes at the front and 350mm units at the rear effectively reigning in even the most violent of velocities.

Inside, the cabin is luxuriously appointed with swathes of sumptuous black leather, carbon-fibre detailing and an advanced infotainment system with 19 Harman-Kardon speakers and a centrally-mounted 8.4inch touchscreen. A tinted glass roof with sunroof gives a more spacious feel and allows even more of that glorious V8 growl to enter the cockpit.

With only 120 units coming to the UK in right hand drive, it’s the ultimate machine for the performance-addicted petrolhead that wants to stand out from the crowd.
